Six talented bands from Renfrewshire schools are set for a live music showdown this month in a battle of the bands-style competition.

The Renfrewshire Schools Rock Showcase will take place in Paisley Grammar School on Monday 25 June and tickets are on sale now.

The event is shaping up to be highly entertaining, with young local musicians set to perform well known rock songs – and material they’ve written themselves.

Prizes will be up for grabs for best original song, best cover, best solo, and best overall performance.

Judges on the night will be Gerry Rossi, music lecturer from Strathclyde University and Mhairi-Lou Hickey, freelance singer and performer.

Hamish Whittle, Renfrewshire Council’s Youth Music Development Officer is organising the event. He said: “Our schools are full of talented young musicians – and what better way to showcase this than a fun, battle of the bands-style competition. This is an annual event that allows Renfrewshire pupils who work hard to practice their music to come together and stage an entertaining show for local people to come along and enjoy. I wish the six bands the very best of luck and urge as many people as possible to snap up a ticket for the night.”

The six bands set to take part are one from one from each: Paisley Grammar, Gryffe High, and St Andrew’s Academy and three teams who took part in the council’s Easter Rock School programme. The last three are made up of pupils from schools across Renfrewshire with ages ranging from P5 to S4.

Prizes have been donated by local music retailers and will include a day the recording studio at Loud’n’Proud, Renfrew, for the best overall band.

Tickets cost £3 and are available by calling 0141 840 3825 or emailing Hamish.whittle@renfrewshire.gov.uk

Renfrewshire Pupils Get Ready To Rock

Pupils from Renfrewshire schools are being invited to get ready to rock over the Easter holidays.

Renfrewshire Instrumental Service, in partnership with ‘Loud ‘n’ Proud’ is offering free workshops to pupils up to and including S3 from Renfrewshire schools.

The project, funded by Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative, is calling for pupils who have experience on one of the following: guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboard or voice.

Pupils will have the opportunity to attend band coaching and song writing workshops along with receiving tuition on an intensive basis for three hours each day.  Participants will then be able to showcase their work at the annual ‘Battle of the Bands’ event where they will have the chance to see experienced groups in action as well as compete for a prize in their own category.

Councillor Lorraine Cameron, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Education Policy Board, said, “This partnership programme offers a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to be creative and to work together.  I’m really looking forward to hearing them perform together at the Battle of the Bands event later in the year.”

The sessions will take place at Westway Studios in Renfrew week commencing Monday 9 April at either morning or afternoon sessions and will run until Friday 13 April.

To register for the workshops, please contact Youth Music Initiative Development Officers on: 0141 840 8925, or by emailing hamish.whittle@renfrewshire.gov.uk or emma.anderson@renfrewshire.gov.uk for consent forms and a rehearsal schedule.
