Renfrewshire runners are being urged to get their entries in for this year’s Paisley 10k and Fun Run to make the most of the early-bird discount that ends soon.

The cut-price entry fees are still available – but only until Friday 1 June.

Runners taking part in the 10k can save £3 on the normal entry fee, while adult fun runners save £1 and children save £2. The discounts are only available to people entering online at www.paisley10k.com

The event takes place on Sunday 26 August and is expected to be the biggest yet.

Last year 1,600 people took part, ranging from serious athletes to fun runners raising cash for charity.

Councillor Iain McMillan, Convener of the Community and Family Care Policy Board will take part in the race. He said: “This year’s Paisley 10k and Fun Run is shaping up to be the best yet and there’s no better time to get your entry in to get your early bird discount that ends soon.

“The event offers people the chance to develop a more active lifestyle in an enjoyable and fun way. It’s also a great way to raise Paisley’s profile as one of the British Heart Foundation’s three Scottish Heart Towns – and I’d urge as many local people as possible to get involved and sign up before 1 June.”

Paisley’s 10k is flat and fast, with a course that takes competitors through the historic town centre, along Paisley canal and Kilmacolm cycle track.

This year runners will also raise the profile of Renfrewshire as a Fairtrade Zone by sporting Fairtrade cotton t-shirts sponsored by Renfrewshire’s Fairtrade Flagship employer, MEPC Hillington.

The entry fee for the 10k is £18 (early bird £15). There is a group discount where one free entry is offered for every five paying entries.

The entry fee for the Fun run is £8 for adults (early bird £7) and £6 for children under 16 (early bird £4). The adult and child discount offers a joint entry for £12 (early bird £10).

Scottish Athletics League members are eligible for a further £2 discount on all categories.

The event takes place on Sunday 26 August and is expected to be the biggest ever. Last year some 1,600 people took part, ranging from serious athletes out to improve their personal best to fun runners raising money for their favourite charity.

Paisley’s 10k is noted for being flat and fast, with a course that takes competitors through the historic town centre, along Paisley canal and Kilmacolm cycle track.

Councillor Susan McDonald, Renfrewshire Council’s Sports Champion said: “The Paisley 10k and Fun Run offer people the chance to develop a more active lifestyle in an enjoyable way. It’s also a great way to raise Paisley’s profile as one of the British Heart Foundation’s three Scottish Heart Towns. Heart disease is a big issue and regular exercise is a vital part of the fight to stay fit and healthy.”

This year runners will also raise the profile of Renfrewshire as a Fairtrade Zone by sporting Fairtrade cotton t-shirts sponsored by Renfrewshire’s Fairtrade Flagship employer, MEPC Hillington.

Councillor Brian Lawson, chair of the Fairtrade steering group, said: “It will be great to see so many runners carrying the Fairtrade message across Renfrewshire. The support for Fairtrade in Renfrewshire is constantly growing and we want to encourage even more people to step into Fairtrade. In particular we really want Renfrewshire to back the Fairtrade Foundation’s challenge of reaching 1.5 million steps this year and the 10k and Fun Run will help us go even further.”
