Why we are bidding
Paisley is bidding for UK City of Culture 2021 as part of ambitious plans to use the town’s internationally-significant collection of heritage and cultural assets to transform its future.
UK City of Culture means a year-long extravaganza of major national events – but it isn’t just a big year-long party. It’s about long-lasting economic, social and cultural change.
Previous winners were cities with similar challenges to Paisley but which had a clear plan to use UK City of Culture status to change things for the better.
A successful bid would raise Paisley’s profile by putting us in the international spotlight and make us a key destination for cultural and heritage tourism.
It will also create jobs, provide new opportunities for local business, and generate footfall for our town centre and High Street.
And it will change perceptions of Paisley at home and abroad, help us build a new sense of pride in Paisley and everything it has to offer, and create a lasting legacy which puts culture and all the benefits it brings at the heart of people’s lives.
We will be rolling out a programme of community engagement soon, which will give everybody who cares about Paisley the chance to help shape the bid.
