Renfrewshire’s award-winning Street Stuff scheme has been honoured at Scotland’s most prestigious footballing awards ceremony – for the second year in a row.

The Street Stuff team picked up the trophy for Best Community Initiative for their Kick and Collect programme at the Clydesdale Bank Premier League Awards 2012.

Street Stuff is a youth diversionary scheme run by partners including St Mirren and Renfrewshire Council which has helped reduce youth crime by offering activities such as street football.

This week’s success means the programme has now won 11 different awards since it kicked off in 2009 – meaning it now has its own football team worth of honours.

Kick and Collect is a programme run by Street Stuff which sees youngsters given tickets for days out as a reward for taking part in voluntary work in the community.

Over the past year, young people have taken part in work around Renfrewshire such as litter-pick-ups, as part of the council’s Clean Renfrewshire campaign, plus painting and graffiti cleaning.

In return, they have earned prizes including St Mirren tickets and fun days out at places such as paintball and Xscape at Braehead.

Street Stuff was named the Best Community Initiative award at last year’s SPL awards for its work in reducing youth-related anti-social behaviour in the area.

The glittering black-tie ceremony at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel on Tuesday saw Street Stuff representatives rub shoulders with the stars of Scottish football.

And the evening marked a double celebration for St Mirren, who also lifted the Clydesdale Bank Family Champions Award for the quality of matchday experience offered to families at St Mirren Park.

St Mirren general manager Brian Caldwell said: “Winning this award is well-deserved recognition for our community coaches and partners as a lot of time and hard work goes into this.

“With Kick and Collect, we are helping youngsters to have more pride in themselves and their community, which is a win-win situation for everybody.”

Alan McNiven, chief executive of Engage Renfrewshire, and chair of the Street Stuff Management Group, said: “It is fantastic the Kick and Collect programme has received this prestigious national award.

“Renfrewshire is leading the way in this type of youth engagement, and many other local authority areas have approached the team to find out why we have been so successful.

“The joint working of the partners and the high-quality delivery of the Street Stuff coaching staff have been key to that success.”

Street Stuff is a partnership between St Mirren, Renfrewshire Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, Engage Renfrewshire, McGill’s, and Reid Kerr College.

The programme attracts more than 20,000 young people a year and has led to youth disorder dropping between 18% and 40% in each area where it operates. The Street Stuff timetable for the next two months can be viewed at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk

The youngsters from Renfrewshire’s award-winning Street Stuff youth diversionary project took to the field at St Mirren Park for a free multi-sports event themed around the upcoming summer Games in London.

Around 150 young people took part in sports including football, hockey, rugby, short tennis and archery, as well as running, throwing and jumping events.

And many of them were able to pick up some podium pride on the day, with medals dished out to the best performers.

Street Stuff co-ordinator Stephen Gallagher said: “We had run the event before as a football-only thing, but decided to go with an Olympic theme this year. The day was really successful and the kids really enjoyed trying different sports.

“The fact they got the chance to run out on to the pitch at St Mirren Park was a real thrill for them, as they have been down there to see St Mirren play, but have never been on the first-team park before.

“They told us they cannot wait for next year’s event!”

Virtuoso trombonist Dennis Rollins plays Paisley Arts Centre on May 26.
Rollins has played at the forefront of UK jazz, funk and pop for 25 years, performing with such stars as Maceo Parker, Courtney Pine and The Brand New Heavies.

In 2006 his jazz/funk outfit Badbone & Co won the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best Band and the following year he picked up Trombonist of the Year at both the British Jazz Awards, and the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards. He also received nominations in the Urban Music Awards and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

An award winning leader in his own right, his latest project is the Velocity Trio, is a brilliant marriage of refined contemporary jazz arrangements with simmering funk grooves. This unique trombone-Hammond organ-drums line-up honours the jazz tradition while pushing it forward at the same time.

Velocity Trio also includes Hammond Organ virtuoso Ross Stanley and fiery drummer Pedro Segundo and they make their debut on The 11th Gate, recorded for visionary U.S. label Motéma. The 11 tracks that make up the album are inspired by the widely publicised 11-11-11 Phenomenon, a date attributed by some as ushering in an age of global awareness. It’s clear that this is one of Rollins’ strongest musical statements yet.

Tickets for Dennis Rollins cost £10 (£6 conc) and Velocity Trio are available by calling the box office on 041 887 1010 or logging onto www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/onlinebooking.

The Olympic Torch Relay is just four weeks away from passing through Renfrewshire – and the Torchbearers who’ll carry the flame through Lochwinnoch on Friday 8 June are counting down to a moment they’ll remember forever.

Vegard Sjursen, 27, from Trondheim in Norway; Jennifer Sundqvist, 27, from Stockholm in Sweden; and Janice Hendrie, 56, from Greenock, will join Natalie Still, 18, from Johnstone as Lochwinnoch Torchbearers.

Natalie is the only Renfrewshire resident who’ll carry the flame through the area. She was nominated by Ewan Jamieson, a Renfrewshire Council Active Schools Co-Ordinator.

Natalie said: “I’ve had a passion for sport from a young age. I’ve been inspired by the Active Schools staff and PE staff at Johnstone High School and began to think I could do for others what they had done for me. I’ve gained so many life skills and great experiences from taking part in, and leading sports sessions over the last few years and I think it’s something everybody should get involved in. When I realised the Olympics were coming to London I thought it was perfect opportunity to inspire more children to take part in sport and hopefully instill in them the passion that I have for sport and the Olympics.

“Being selected as a Torchbearer is a dream come true. When Ewan told me he’d nominated me I was thrilled, but didn’t think I would be selected. When I found out I was officially getting to carry the Torch I was blown away – it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. Getting to carry the torch through Lochwinnoch makes the experience even more special since it is close to my home town – so friends and family can come and watch and it is also one of the villages where I’ve worked to get children involved in sport over the last 4 years.”

Janice has been a PE teacher at Notre Dame High School in Greenock for 34 years and is also a head coach at Inverclyde Athletics Club. She won her Torchbearer role in October through a Real Radio competition.

Janice said: “I was honoured that my club, Inverclyde AC, felt strongly enough to nominate me. When I was announced as the winner, it was pretty nerve wracking to be on the radio.

“Since then the reaction and support from others has increased my awareness of what a great honour this is – and with that comes a responsibility to be a role model. I’m also delighted with the positive publicity this is bringing to both my club and to the school I teach in.”

“I am now looking forward to taking part and my pupils have been ‘training me’ by running round the pitch holding an upturned cone to simulate the torch. However I think this is to take my attention off the fact that they’re the ones doing the running!”

Vegard Sjursen is Sports Manager at his local track and field club and was nominated to be a Torchbearer by his colleagues.

He said: “My sports career started in track and field. I can thank my mama as she forced me to the first training sessions 9 years old. I am glad she saw my talent, and it didn’t take long before I loved the sport.

“In 2001 I became the fastest 16 year old in Norway in the 60m event, and won the Norwegian Youth Championship. It was a great moment for me!

“The sport manager in the local club got me involved in organising and I joined the board. I learned a lot, and was also coached in starting, judging athletics, and training young athletes.

“I am very thankful for those people that have nominated me to carry the flame. It’s because of the people around me I do this. I know they appreciate my work. A dream day for me is being on the track a sunny day, among friends, doing my sprinting.

“It’s a great honor for me to carry the flame. It is a sign that everything is possible for anyone that has dreams.”

Jennifer Sundqvist has a rugby playing background and now works for the Swedish Rugby Union as Head of Information. She was nominated by her colleagues.

She said: “I started playing rugby in 1999 when I was living in Hong Kong. I went on to represent Hong Kong in rugby sevens for three years, captaining the team in my final year. I then moved to New Zealand to study and played for the Otago University RFC for six years.

“On returning to Sweden I began working for the Swedish Rugby Union and I still play – currently for the Stockholm Exiles RFC. Last year I also served as the General Manager for the Swedish Women’s Sevens Team.”

“I’m honoured to have been chosen to carry the Olympic flame. It still feels surreal, and will probably continue to do so until I’m standing there with torch. Since I started playing rugby in school, the Olympics have been a dream. It doesn’t seem a likely possibility for me anymore, with rugby only being reintroduced into the Games in 2016, so I’m thrilled to have this little part to play in the Olympics.”

The Olympic Torch will arrive into Lochwinnoch at 2.00 pm on Friday 8 June from Beith, North Ayrshire on the A760 before travelling along Main Street (B786), High Street (B766), and will continue on the B786 along Johnshill where the flame will then pass into Kilmacolm, Inverclyde.

The streets along the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay can be viewed in full atwww.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay This gives street-by-street details and proposed start times for when the Olympic Flame will travel.

Show and Tell presents John Peels Shed at Paisley Arts Centre on Friday 25 May, 7.30pm.
A beautifully written show for music and theatre lovers at Paisley Arts Centre.
In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to. This five-star, sell-out smash theatre hit of the Edinburgh Festival is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in wireless. It’s a wonderful piece of humorous and poignant storytelling, charting John Osborne’s formative years through the music, radio and people he experienced.

After the show Gordon McIntyre from John Peel favourite’s ‘ballboy’ will play an intimate show above the theatre in the Haunt Bar. The performance is first come first serve for those who attended John Peel’s Shed.

John Peel’s Shed is inspired by radio Head (Radio 4’s book of the week) and script edited by Joe Dunthorne (Submarine).

John Peel’s Shed cost £10 (£6 conc) and tickets are available online at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/onlinebooking or by calling 0141 887 1010.
