CLLR GEORGE ADAM LEADS THE TRIBUTES TO 1820 MARTYRS

CLLR GEORGE ADAM LEADS THE TRIBUTES TO 1820 MARTYRS

SNP councillor and parliamentary candidate for Paisley, Cllr George Adam, led the tributes at the annual 1820 Society commemoration to the leaders of the 1820 Insurrection at the Martyrs Monument in Woodside Cemetery on Saturday 14th August 2010.

Every year the 1820 Society hold a commemoration to the leaders of the 1820 Insurrection – John Baird, Andrew Hardie and James Wilson; and remember the sacrifices that these men, and many others, gave in standing up for the rights of ordinary working people to give them an equal voice in society. The state execution of Baird, Hardie and Wilson did nothing to extinguish the demands of the working class in Scotland.

The proceedings were overseen by the Ian Ramsay of the 1820 Society and included speeches John McNaughton of Paisley and District Trade Union Council with Mags MacLaren, Convenor of Paisley SNP, laying the wreath at the monument.

Cllr George Adam said;

“In looking forward to a fairer, modern Scotland we must not forget the struggles of the past and especially the courage of ordinary working people such as Baird, Hardie and Wilson who gave their lives for the cause that they believed in.

“As a long term member of the 1820 Society I was honoured to give the speech welcoming members and supporters of the 1820 Society to this year’s commemoration and was delighted by the turnout including many members of Paisley SNP, including Cllr Kenny MacLaren the only local ward councillor for the area who attended the event.

“Paisley has a history of radical politics and come the Scottish Parliament election in May 2011 this can be repeated by a victory for the SNP over the stale, incoherent and stifling policies promoted by Labour. Only the SNP have been pushing a positive vision for Paisley –and I am proud to be a Paisley Buddie standing up for my local town.

“Despite Labour’s recession and the Coalition’s cutbacks, the SNP are leading the regeneration in Paisley with investment in new and improved facilities such as the Lagoon, improving council housing and pushing for town centre improvements such as the redevelopment of the Arnotts building.”

Visit Santa in his Arctic Kingdom

Visit Santa in his Arctic Kingdom… just for a day from Glasgow Airport

The UK may be in the grip of belt-tightening but despite the economic gloom you can still treat your children to a once-in-a-lifetime trip to visit Santa in True Lapland this Christmas.

Transun, the UK’s leading operator of Santa trips to Lapland, is laying on extra day-trip flights in December, including a number of flights from Glasgow airport, due to their success last year, ensuring that you can still see the thrill on your children’s faces when they visit the grand old man in person – without breaking the bank.

Families on Transun’s day trips will take a ride on a Reindeer sleigh, go on an exciting husky sled journey, ride through breathtaking arctic scenery on a snowmobile and take part in a thrilling search for Santa, before finally meeting the big man himself. And they will still be back home in time for supper.

Nico Kostich, Transun’s Head of Sales and Trading, said: “Day breaks are the recession’s alternative to big-budget holidays. People don’t want to sacrifice their family holidays but at the same time perhaps can’t afford to travel for a long period of time.

“Transun offer an affordable way to create precious family memories, without breaking the bank.”

Transun’s day breaks start from only £399 per person and are operating from Glasgow airport on the 17th and 21st of December, right next to Christmas time to really get the excitement flowing. Transun is the UK’s leading operator of Santa breaks, with over 15 years’ experience operating to Lapland.

“Our packages are all-inclusive, with meals, rides and snow activities included,’ says Mr Kostich. “The private meeting with Santa will provide precious and magical memories, despite the recession.”

And for families that want to linger a little longer in Santa’s Lapland, Transun is also offering a competitively priced short break from Glasgow Airport during the Christmas period, for three nights.

Issued by Glasgow Airport on behalf of Transun.

George Adam is Paisley Candidate!

George Adam is Paisley Candidate!

Councillor George Adam, elected member for Paisley South, was recently selected as the Parliamentary Candidate for the new Paisley Constituency in for next years Scottish Parliamentary election in May 2011. This is the first time that a Paisley-only seat has been contested in the Scottish Parliament, due to recent boundary changes.

George was elected to Ward 5: Paisley South Ward of Renfrewshire Council in 2007 Council election. George has been involved with the Scottish National Party since he was 18. He was previously a Scottish Parliamentary Candidate for the Paisley North Constituency during the 2003 Scottish Parliament election.
George was born in Elderslie, in June 1969 (41), he is a true Paisley Buddie and is a fanatical supporter of St Mirren FC. George lives in the towns eastend with his wife Stacey. He has two children- James 18 and Jessica 16 – who live with their mother locally. George and his wife Stacey regularly attend St Mirren matches and follow the Scottish Football team when ever they can

George is convenor of Paisley South Local Area Committee on Renfrewshire Council and has been heavily involved, with that committee, in the regeneration of the Park areas in his ward. The Outdoor Gym in Brodie Park is one of many innovations from this and has proved so popular that another was commissioned for Durrokstock Park in Paisley. He has regularly involved himself in fund-raising for local charities and has ran Paisley 10k for Paisley & District MS Society and MND Scotland for 2010.

Councillor George Adam says:

“I am really excited about this campaign and I am extremely proud that I am the first candidate for this new Scottish Parliamentary seat of Paisley. Paisley is my home town and when I discovered what the new boundaries would be, I knew the 2011 Scottish Elections in the town could be a historic event.

Paisley Buddies are fed up with the tired and troublesome Labour MSP’s who have represented them over recent history. Very few actually come from the town and many where just political placements. This has lead many locals to look cynically upon local politicians and I believe things could be different.

We only have to look at the work the Renfrewshire administration has already done in regeneration of the Paisley Town centre. The Arnotts site will be transformed in the coming years, empty shops being actively promoted and vastly improved town centre events that increase the shoppers to our town. But it is a work in progress and we must ensure that this continues. It is important that we cannot rely on the inactive Labour MSP’s of the past that have no ideas and only provide us with soundbites and cliches.

We are living in very difficult economic times and it is important that we have representation from someone who has Paisley’s best interests at heart. I believe I am that person. I want to build further on the foundations laid by the local SNP and make Paisley the town we all want it to be.

I will be the only local candidate in next years election. The only one that can claim the title of a true Paisley Buddie. This alone is a very important distinction between myself and the rest. It is time we take Paisley back for ourselves. Moving away from the fatigued , failing politicians of the past and working together for the betterment of our town.

A number of years ago an employer of mine asked me if there was anything more to George Adam than I’m from Paisley, I support St Mirren and I’m in the SNP. I flippantly added – apart from my wife and children that’s about it. But on reflection I can look at this comment and put it into context for the coming election. My name’s George Adam, I come from Paisley and I want to be the your first Member of the Scottish Parliament!”

Community Champions recognised by Scottish Parliament

Community Champions recognised by Scottish Parliament
Aug 16 2010 by Alison Rennie, Paisley Daily Express

A NEW project which aims to honour voluntary groups and charities working hard in our communities has been recognised by the Scottish Parliament.

Community Champions is a new section on the popular Paisley.org.uk website which highlights a different Renfrewshire organisation every month.

The section was the brainchild of Councillor Kenny MacLaren who spoke to the Renfrewshire Council for Voluntary Services (RCVS) and Paisley.org.uk about new ways of promoting local charities and voluntary groups. Now West of Scotland MSP Stuart McMillan has put a motion in the Scottish Parliament recognising the initiative.

He said: “I would like to congratulate RCVS, Paisley.org.uk and Councillor MacLaren for working together to bring forward this new initiative.“This is an excellent idea to promote local organisations to a wider audience.“This collaborative approach will help to boost the profile of many local groups who don’t often get the recognition they deserve.“I was more than happy to lodge a motion in the Scottish Parliament in support of Paisley Community Champions, and I wish this project well in the future.

Brian McGuire, who runs Paisley.org.uk said he was honoured by the Scottish Parliament recognition. He added: “I am delighted for the groups that we are supporting. This is superb. To be written into Scottish History, albeit in a very small way, is really something, and I would like to thank all the MSPs who have supported the motion and also Councillor MacLaren for all his hard work.”Community Champions picks a different group to be their Champion of the Month.

A special profile is put online which highlights the good work the members have been doing and the services and opportunities the group offers. It can be found by logging on at www.paisley.org.uk/community Councillor Kenny MacLaren said community groups have been contacting him to put themselves forward as Community Champions.

He added: “The Community Champions project is an excellent example of people and groups coming together to find a solution to benefit all.“When I first raised this idea with Brian and RCVS I was delighted by the enthusiasm they showed.“This helped to drive forward a project that can be copied in other areas, and shows that Renfrewshire is leading the way.“Since its launch, I have been in touch with a few groups who have seen the press stories about this site and who are interested in putting themselves forward.

”Community Champions launched in July with a profile on Rainbow Turtle, which promotes Fairtrade across Renfrewshire.

This month’s Champion is the Renfrewshire Carers Centre. Any charity, voluntary group or social enterprise in Renfrewshire who’d like to be involved with Community Champions can contact Gordon Mclean at RCVS online at gordon.mclean@rcvsweb.co.uk or by calling 0141 587 2487.

Wallace Day 2010

HUNDREDS of patriotic Scots will descend on Braveheart Sir William Wallace’s Elderslie birthplace later this month to commemorate his murder over 700 years ago.
The traditional Wallace Day parade will take place on Saturday, August 21, and leaves from Ludovic Square, in Johnstone, at 2.30pm to walk to the Wallace Monument, in Elderslie, where wreaths are laid.
In the evening, Elderslie Village Hall will host an evening of entertainment with Ted Christopher and Albannach, and a bar will be available.
Wallace Day is one of the most colourful in Renfrewshire’s year and the march is headed by a pipe band and many of those who go along get right into the spirit of things by wearing tartan and carrying Saltires.
Wallace, along with Andrew Moray, is remembered for defeating an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297.
Organisers say the march dedicated to the freedom fighter will draw hundreds of people from across the country.
Wallace was born in the village around 1270 and went on to become Renfrewshire’s most famous son as, along with Andrew Moray, he defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
He was named Guardian of Scotland but resigned the post after defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298.
Wallace evaded English attempts on his life for several years until he was captured at Robroyston in 1305.
He was handed over to Edward I of England, who had him executed for treason at Smithfield, London.
Now the Society of William Wallace will mark his death with their latest rally.

BAA ballot results

From: Glasgow Airport

Please attribute to a BAA spokesperson:

We regret the uncertainty this vote has already caused our passengers and airlines.

We hope that the union will engage with us quickly to conclude an agreement.

Fewer than half of those people eligible to vote have done so and we do not believe this result provides a clear mandate for strike action.
