Accordion Festival Saturday 18th February

The National Accordion Organisation of the United Kingdom , West of Scotland Accordion Festival is being held in Glenniffer High School on Saturday 18th February. This festival is open to the public for anyone interested in accordion music. The festival competition is for Soloists (ages and graded), Duets, Ensemble, Musette, Scottish and Orchestras and these sections will be on throughout the day. It starts at 9.00am and goes on to 5pm. Pupils from the two very successful local Paisley schools, the Brian Laurie Paisley Academy and the Graham Laurie Music Education Centre will be competing at the festival along with accordionists from all over Scotland .... to be the best in the country! The competitors will go on to represent Scotland at the National Finals of the NAO. These National Championships are be held in Liverpool at the Adelphi Hotel on 27th-29th April. Weaving Musical Threads is Renfrewshire's Olympic Festival celebration of its people, history and place in the world. Music, theatre, art, dance, literature, film and media will all be represented in diverse venues throughout the area. There is something for everyone and it is FREE. Celebrating together with the rest of the UK during Music Nation weekend, Weaving Musical Threads will be a taste of Olympic prowess before the torch reaches Lochwinnoch in June. Programme The busy programme for the weekend includes performances by choirs, orchestras, writers, poets, classical and folk singers, youth bands and dancers, exhibitions by local artists and sculptors and rare film showings. Schools music will be represented alongside rock, jazz and ceilidh bands and classical piano quintets. Members of the public will be able to try out an accordion, play in an orchestra or sing in a choir. They can join with others to write a poem or a song, try out a spinning wheel and find out more about their local history from the various storytellers and historians on hand. Saturday events will take place in town halls, historical cottages and museums across the area - Paisley, Johnstone, Lochwinnoch, Bishopton and Renfrew - while Sunday events will be concentrated in 'The Hub' - Paisley Abbey and Paisley Town Hall. All events are free to make them as accessible to everyone as possible. Provost’s Community Awards shortlist announced

The shortlist of nominees for the 2012 Renfrewshire Provost’s Community Awards has been announced. The 17 finalists have been chosen from all the nominations received by a panel of judges headed by Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson. The awards recognise the inspirational achievements of people from across Renfrewshire. Each of the shortlisted nominees and the person who nominated them will be invited to attend the awards ceremony which is being held at the Glynhill Hotel, Renfrew on Saturday 25 February. The awards are hosted by Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson who will this year be joined by STV’s Sean Batty and River City’s Tom Urie. Provost Lawson said: “As ever the judging process was very difficult. There are so many wonderful people out there with inspiring and moving stories. All of those nominated deserve recognition and I’m delighted with all the nominations we received this year. I’m really looking forward to meeting all the finalists when they come along to the awards ceremony.
