A full evacuation of Reid Kerr College's Academy of Creative Arts in New Street late this afternoon.

No reports of a actuall fire, looks as if it was a false alarm. Over 100 students could be seen awaiting to get back into the building just before 4'0 clock this afternoon.

This looks like the old YMCA. Hope it was just a false alarm, it was likely someone having a fly puff.

Hope everyone is okay definately the Old YMCA New Street hasn't changed in thiry years maybe the buildings look a bit cleaner. Alice

MAJOR FIRE DESTROYS JOHNSTONE MILL.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue has said it is tackling a "major fire" at the former Paton's mill in Johnstone Renfrewshire.

Crews were called to the building in Main Street, Johnstone, at about 1522 BST on Wednesday.

The fire service said the blaze was "quickly" classified as a level two incident - meaning that a minimum of five appliances were called out.

Two aerial rescue pumps are being used to pour water onto the roof of the building, which is well alight.

It is understood that there is no threat to neighbouring buildings at the present time.

PATONS MILL

The dramatic fire saw Fire Engines being called apon from all over Glasgow and as far away as dreghorn both HDPU ( Heavy Duty Pumping Units ) were called apon which must have been a first for Renfrewshire, as the last one was seen in use was at Christies Scrapyard Fire in Renfrew last year, Forward commend units were mobilised from the local area as well as from Dreghorn.

DAMAGE

One roof completely collapsed during the height of the raging fire that flamed Patons Mill at its height which saw all traffic being diverted and only one side of the road being opened at 8'o clock tonight.

RESIDENTS SHOCKED

Local community was shocked at what they saw but spoke of saying it was something that was waiting to happen due to the insecurity of the building, with one local resident reporting seeing Children running from the scene shortly before Fire broke out, It is also of no doubt Prince Charles shall be saddened hearing of tonights events at Patons Mill as he himself has taken a keen interest in seeing the Building transformed and with a meeting thta was to take place in only a few weeks it's news that has shocked the local community and local Historians alike.
