HI EVERYONE

A few of us have been talking about shops and streets in and around George/Canal Streets that we can remember, when we lived there so we thought it would be good for us to start naming a few shops and streets so that everyone can join in and we will find out what it is like in that area now. Alice

I will start at the top end as we called it. McDowells butchers and a grocers shop, West School (how could I forget) St Mary's church and house where priest lived. Buildings nears West street I think there was a dairy on corner. I could go on but I want to leave some for others. Alice

There was a joiners' shop George Street near Castle Street. One of my cousins was the apprentice there and stayed through thick and thin. When the owner died he left his business to my cousin.

Yes Alice, everythings still there but nursery built, just past chapel house,at corner of West st.
My cuz lived on top floor there in West st,so can ask her what shop was there.I just remember pub on opposite corner of West st,which is still there(I think ,blink and theyve shut down nowadays)
Jeanette, that would be Blairs joiners just next to my close number 126,and Mccurissons sweet shop next to it.Round at corner of Castle st was Andersons fireplaces.Coming up toward Queen st there was a wee shop, called Smiths Hobby shop, think thats all between Castle and Queen st.
Nothing at all left of it today, all new flats

Thanks for the pics Westender.

Hi Alice,I remember Jimmy Mcdowells the butchers, then the grocer shop, think it was called LESLIES, he used to always wear a long apron, then there was the McNivens, the sweetie shop,West School i knew very well, along to WEST STR, on the rhs was'nt there a Cobblers shop, with a WEE man in the window (statue),used to get our shoes soled and heeled there,on the opposite side i think there was YANKIE MAGS,used to get a penny worth of broken crisps there, then the MAXWELLTON BAR i think onthe rhs.
