Heriot Primary School and Nursery pupils contributed an impressive 90 kilograms of clothing items to their annual clothes recycling fundraiser on 9 March.

The Paisley school filled 25 bin bags with unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, belts, small jewellery and linen to raise funds for a ‘Big Spring Clean’ event in May.

The school provided the items to Nessie, a company that works in partnership with community groups across Scotland. Nessie provides the school with a clothes recycling bin and pays 50 pence per kilo of clothes.

Depute Head Teacher Craig McCrorie said: “Our pupils love getting involved in recycling and have really embraced this year’s challenge, raising a total of £45.

“It’s been wonderful to see children of all ages across the school getting involved along with staff and parents.

“We’ve held our recycling event for the past two years and use funds towards items such as paint, plants, soil, seeds and other materials which help us to contribute positively to the Eco Schools programme.”

The Eco-Schools programme involves hands-on, real-world learning about the environment, enabling schools to progress to earning an internationally recognised Green Flag Award which is renewed over the years.

Heriot Primary School and Nursery has held Green Flag Status for many years and has its own Eco Committee made up of 22 primary school students and two nursery students.

Renfrewshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Convener, Councillor Jim Paterson said: “It’s great to see Renfrewshire schools getting involved in recycling and particularly in the Eco-Schools Programme which gets the whole school involved in environmental projects.

“Well done to everyone at Heriot Primary School and Nursery for raising funds through this very worthwhile recycling event that will benefit others in our community as well as the environment.”

Heriot’s clothes recycling event was held in advance of Pass it On Week, Scotland’s annual celebration of re-use that runs from 10-18 March 2018.
