A last gasp equaliser gave St Mirren a much welcome point on Saturday as Alex Rae’s side drew 1-1 with Ayr United in a Ladbrokes Championship match-up at Somerset Park.
It was the home side who commanded the early possession and pace and deservedly took the lead on 14 minutes when Brian Gilmour whipped a free-kick into the St Mirren penalty-area which was headed home by Jamie Adams.
Saints looked brighter in the second half but it took until the 89th minute before they had anything to show for it. A long throw-in from Lawrence Shankland gave the Ayr defence problems with substitute Tom Walsh cashing in by heading home the equaliser.
John Sutton had a chance one on one with Ayr keeper Greg Fleming to nab all the points but Fleming stood up well to the Saints striker. Former Buddie Gary Harkins then almost snatched the victory at the opposite end of the park but he fired his effort wide of the post as both sides had to settle for a share of the points.
