Development League: Rangers 0-1 St Mirren

The St Mirren Under-20 side kicked-off the new season by collecting three points on Tuesday evening as they headed to Forthbank Stadium in Stirling to face Rangers in the opening SPFL Development League fixture of 2016/17.
The Glasgow side had the upper hand early on as Saints had to wait until the 10 minute mark for their first chance when Jordan Stewart’s shot from just outside the box was deflected out for a corner.
Rangers then passed up chances from Ross Lyon and Josh Jeffries as Saints keeper Reece Willison kept his goal intact.
Just after the half-hour had elapsed Lewis McLear had a good chance but the striker pulled his shot wide of goal with Rangers keeper Robby McCrorie looking beat.
The second half got under way with Lyon testing the Saints defence again but his final shot went wide of Willison’s goal. The Saints keeper stood firm on 55 minutes when Jeffries fired a shot towards goal that was well held by Willison.
On the hour mark Saints had a decent chance to grab the lead when Ben Gordon headed wide at the back post but five minutes later they went on to take the lead with a little bit of football magic. Jordan Stewart stepped up and swerved his free-kick round the Rangers wall and into the top corner to open the scoring.
Rangers started to put on the push for an equaliser but passed up chances from Andy Dallas and Liam Burt. The Glasgow side came close again in injury time but Willison once again stood strong as he touched Lyon’s close range effort over the bar to help Saints to an opening day win.
