Saints came up just short in their bid to progress from their Betfred Cup group after beating Edinburgh City 3-0 this afternoon. Manager Alex Rae gives his thoughts.
Saints needed to win by four goals against the League Two side but only managed to triumph by three. The manager said: “We created numerous chances. My only criticism today of the boys is we weren’t clinical enough. I felt the intensity from the start was really good, we created untold amount of chances, the boys were a threat from the wings and Clarkson and Shankland created a few good opportunities for themselves as well.
“Overall I was relatively pleased with the application on the back of a poor result last week. We’re just disappointed, to get nine points out of a possible twelve is a sore one to take but it puts us in good stead for next week because we’re obviously going to have a tough task against our local rivals.”
Shortly after making it 3-0, Saints had a good shout for a penalty turned down after Gordon Donaldson’s challenge on striker Lawrence Shankland. The Saints boss was in no doubt as to what the decision should have been: “For the life of me I can’t understand why he’s not given a penalty. It’s such a poor decision it beggars belief. The actual reality for me was it was a penalty, it wasn’t even a dubious one.
“Out-with that, the amount of chances that were cleared off the lines and things, we’re just disappointed.”
