WOULD-BE runners in the Paisley 10k Race are being given the chance of specialist coaching for the big event.

Race organisers Renfrewshire Leisure have teamed up with Kilbarchan Amateur Athletics Club to provide Paisley 10k Training Camps to get runners fit and ready for the starting gun.

The training sessions – twice a week for 12 weeks from Monday, May 30 – are for people who have never taken part in a 10k race before, or for those who want to improve their time around the Paisley course on Sunday, August 21.

The coaches from Kilbarchan AAC – Grant Sandilands, Jennifer Rooney and Brian Graham – have helped some of the country’s top young athletes.People taking part in the training camps will be given specialised training schedules, advice on diet, how to improve their running performance, how best to prepare for the race and of course lots of encouragement.

The camps are open to both male and female runners over 16 years of age and the two nights a week sessions on a Monday and Thursday at Linwood’s ON-X Sports Centre cost just £50 for the 12-weeks of training camps. The fee also includes the £12 entry into the Paisley 10k.

The popular Paisley 10k Race and Fun Run is sponsored by Paisley First and the sports and outdoors retailer, Decathlon. Macmillan Cancer Support is the Paisley 10k Race official charity partner for the second year.

Last year, more than 1700 people raced around the streets of Paisley in the 10k and were quickly followed by 700 fun runners, many taking part to raise tens of thousands of pounds for their favourite charities and good causes.

Chief executive of Renfrewshire Leisure, Joyce McKellar said: “This is a great way to get fit and ready for the Paisley 10k Race and get advice from some of Scottish athletics top coaches.
“It’s ideal if you’ve never taken part in the Paisley 10k before and if you have, it’s a great opportunity to train and be coached by experts on how to improve your race time.”
