St Mirren’s faint hopes of making the promotion playoffs all but disappeared on Tuesday evening as they went down 2-1 to high-flying Raith Rovers  in a Ladbrokes Championship match-up at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.
Saints were pretty much on top in the early exchanges but it was Raith who opened the scoring on 22 minutes when a quick break caught Saints on the hop as Aidan Connolly sprinted through and easily lifted his shot over the advancing Jamie Langfield.
Fourteen minutes later the task for the home side got even tougher when Ross Callachan took advantage of some shoddy defending to slip the ball past Langfield to double Rovers advantage.
Just ahead of the half-time break St Mirren gave themselves a lifeline when a long throw-in by Lawrence Shankland into Rovers penalty-area had the visitors defence in panic mode which gave Alex Cooper the opportunity to score his first goal for the club which he duly took.
The second half was a much more balanced affair but Saints couldn’t make the breakthrough to take something from the game.
