Preview: St Mirren v Alloa Athletic

by Ryan Goodwin

St Mirren once again find themselves with a huge opportunity to break what is becoming quite a miserable streak – their winless home league record.

Such an opportunity comes with Alloa Athletic – a side currently anchoring the rest of the league – making the trip to Paisley tomorrow afternoon, St Mirren will fancy their chances to finally get a win at the Paisley 2021 Stadium. With David Clarkson, Rocco Quinn and Alex Cooper joining the set-up in recent days, the Buddies are also boosting the amount of players with top-tier experience within their ranks. The Wasps have also added as much in their squad with former Aberdeen striker, Mitch Megginson, joining this week from fellow Championship side Raith Rovers. They have also started to get wins in the league, having beaten both Livingston and Raith – both by a goal to nil – over the last five games. It could well and truly be a game that St Mirren shouldn’t underestimate then, if they are to bid to finally win a home game.
The game also sees Jack Ross return to Paisley, as the ex-St Mirren defender took charge of Alloa at the end of 2015. He was in charge for the last game against the Wasps on the 19th December at the Indodrill Stadium, and with the Saints claiming a 2-0 win on the day, he will perhaps be looking for revenge on his former team.

With the second-half of the season now well underway, Alloa have to continue their recent form and push for points if they are to escape certain relegation. If the Wasps are indeed able to manage it, though, it’ll put huge pressure on St Mirren to keep their heads above the water. Not only will winning the game end their poor home streak, but it will further put distance between the Buddies and the relegation spots.

Tomorrow is a huge opportunity for St Mirren, make no mistake about that, but Alloa will be stronger than they previously were with stronger recent form. This game will be far from easy, but could be a huge three points for either team down the stretch.
