Glasgow Airport is gearing up for what is traditionally one of its busiest periods of the year as tens of thousands of holidaymakers prepare to take to the skies for the Easter school holidays.

More than 110,000 passengers are expected to travel through the airport this weekend with the majority heading to popular sunspots such as the Canary Islands, Turkey, Majorca, Dubai and the sunshine state of Florida.

Airlines including easyJet, Jet2.com and Thomas Cook are all reporting strong demand on popular routes including Marrakech, Kos and Split.

Glasgow Airport will have extra staff in place to offer assistance to help guide passengers, especially those with young children, through check-in and back through arrivals.  There will also be Easter entertainment on offer for departing passengers, including an arts and crafts stall and an Easter bunny.

Francois Bourienne, Commercial Director at Glasgow Airport, said: “2015 has got off to a flying start at the airport and we’re expecting this year’s Easter school holiday break to be a very busy period, which is really encouraging.

“The atmosphere in the terminal is always fantastic in the lead up to and during the Easter holiday period, and we will have more staff on duty to ensure our passengers enjoy a smooth journey through the airport.

“Over the coming weeks we will see our summer flight schedule get into full swing and the next three months will see the arrival of 13 fantastic new routes for our passengers, including direct flights to Las Vegas, Munich and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“We have enjoyed a great deal of success in recent months following the completion of our £20 million terminal redevelopment programme and in developing our route network – these are the main reasons why more and more people are choosing to start their holiday from Glasgow Airport.”

The busy April holiday season is welcome news for the airport which recorded its busiest year since 2008 last year with 7.7 million passengers travelling through its doors.  It also secured 20 new routes and services, including Ryanair which opened a new base at Glasgow Airport in October with seven new routes for winter and nine for summer.

This week Flybe launched a double daily service to Bournemouth, and Ryanair has launched a summer service to Carcassonne.
