A new mobile library service will make it easier for children to read, play and learn in their local area.
The Skoobmobile, which features friendly book monsters known as the Skoobs, will visit schools, nurseries and pre-five centres regularly and communities who live at a distance from libraries during school holidays.
Since their launch last year, the Skoobs initiative has encouraged over 500 children to join their local library.
This new service, which is part of Renfrewshire Council’s Early Years Strategy, will ensure children and families have better access to the library service by taking it into the heart of the community.
As well as Bookbug, storytime and play sessions, children can sign up to the summer reading challenge, get online with iPads and download e-books, and online homework help.
Councillor Jim Harte, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Sport, Leisure and Culture Policy Board, said, “It is so important for our children to have access to a place where they can learn, have fun and develop. The Skoobmobile is great as it travels to places where children are less likely to have access to their local library service, and gives them the chance to explore new books and take part in some exciting activities.”
“Encouraging children to read from an early age puts in place good habits for later in life”, said Councillor Jacqueline Henry, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Education Policy Board. “Reading is so important when it comes to language skills and creative development, and we think the Skoobmobile is a great way to get children excited about reading.
“Children will also be able to get help with their homework, learn about online safety and show off their creative side with arts and crafts. There is something for everyone.”
