Written and performed by Joe Douglas (Associate Director (Touring) Black Watch with National Theatre of Scotland) and directed by Gareth Nicholls (Donald Robertson is Not a Stand-up Comedian with National Theatre of Scotland/The Arches), ‘Educating Ronnie’ is an astonishingly personal look at the nature of charity, friendship and the relationship between the developed and the developing worlds.

In 2002, Joe went on a gap year to Uganda, to visit an aunt who was working for a charity. Amidst the six week blur of safaris, white-water rafting and orphanages, Joe made friends with Ronnie…Ronnie was 16, Joe was 18. They are both eldest sons of large families. They both supported Manchester United. One day, Joe got a text:

“Brother my sponsor has pulled out on me and I want to stay in school. Can you help? Ronnie x”

That text was to change both of their lives and inextricably link them together. Educating Ronnie takes place across a decade: 4000 miles apart and thousands of pounds invested, it explores the murky processes of bettering oneself in Uganda.

What the press say

“A compelling true life tale, engagingly told” **** The List

“As thought-provoking as they come” **** The Independent

“Fascinating” **** What’s On Stage

“Beautiful…absolutely clear-eyed in its recognition that poverty does not turn poor people into saints, and in the disturbing possibility that being individually ripped off by those worse off than ourselves is perhaps the most effective action we can take, if we really care about the world’s grotesque imbalances of wealth and opportunity” **** The Scotsman
