Sporty pupils go for gold at school games

Around 80 athletic pupils from across the central belt have taken part in a special Inter-Authority Games.

On-X Linwood hosted teams from Inverclyde, East Renfrewshire and Glasgow and Renfrewshire.

Inspired by the Commonwealth Games, the four local authorities got together to create a special event giving youngsters an opportunity to get involved in sport.

Winning teams were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals for their podium places, which were presented to the pupils by delegates from national governing bodies.

Each event also had an overall winning team who were awarded a special trophy. Inverclyde won best netball team, best athletics team award was won by Renfrewshire, best badminton team went to Glasgow and East Renfrewshire won best rugby team.

Councillor Jim Harte, Convener of Renfrewshire’s Sports, Leisure and Culture Policy Board, said: “The first Inter-Authority games were a huge success and I’m delighted that Renfrewshire was able to host the event. Together with our neighbours Glasgow, Inverclyde and East Renfrewshire, we have started the ball rolling to get more of our young people to get active and get into competitive sport.

“With the Commonwealth Games about to start, it’s never been a better time to get youngsters involved in sport, developing their sporting skills, building their confidence and helping them to keep active as part of a healthy lifestyle.

“We want to give our young people the opportunity to get involved in sport and we are supporting the goal with a wide range of sporting programmes.”
