LOCAL AIR CADETS RECRUITMENT EVENING

On Saturday the 14th of June, 12 members of local air cadets, 2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron, attended Barshaw Park Gala Day. The cadets were on hand to do face painting for local youngsters with camouflage paint, a skill they learned during many exciting fieldcraft training camps at Garelochhead Army Training Base and Dechmont Ranges. The local kids loved being made up to look like the older cadets.

The cadets also took the opportunity to spread the word about their New Recruitment Induction Evening being held at their Headquarters on 81 Glasgow Road (opposite Iceland, next to Capability Scotland) on Wednesday 18th June, starting at 7pm. It’s open to anyone aged 13 – 17, and there you can find out more about the air cadets and join in some fieldcraft training exercises, even if you missed meeting them at the Gala Day. You can also bring along your parents and friends, everyone’s welcome to find out about all their fun activities like flying, gliding, target shooting and sports. The cadets also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, first aid, camps and leadership.

For local Cadets Jack Patton (14) and Bethany Patton (15), cousins from St Andrews Academy in Paisley, this was the first time recruiting new members since they joined themselves nearly one year ago. Jack said, “In the past year I’ve been flying 3 times, once in a Sea King Search and Rescue Helicopter and twice in a Grob Tutor which is used to train real pilots in the RAF.”

Bethany added,” I’ve been taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the squadron and have completed the skills, volunteering and sports sections. I’ve also done my practice hike and am looking forward to my assessed hike later in the year. Then, I’ll be awarded with my Bronze badge.”

Both will be attending an Outward Bound Course with the air cadets next week. They’ll be taking part in activities such as hill walking, climbing, abseiling and mountain biking. These are just a few of the great activities you could be taking part in too.

Recruitment Officer Claire McKenzie said, “I’d like to thank the staff and cadets for all their hard work today. We’ve spoken to many local people, spreading the word about the great opportunities we offer and we’re all looking forward to seeing them again at our induction evening on Wednesday Night at 7pm on Glasgow Road.”
