·        6% increase in August passenger numbers

Glasgow Airport has reported another month of growth after 746,000 passengers travelled through its doors in August, representing an increase of 6% compared to the same period last year.

Glasgow Airport logo 2013Almost 2.4 million passengers used Glasgow Airport during the peak summer months of June, July and August, ensuring the airport enjoyed its busiest summer since 2008.

Domestic and international traffic both grew by 6% during August and a number of airlines including Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, KLM and Wizz Air all reported an increase in demand.

Whilst much of the airport’s growth can be attributed to airlines adding extra capacity, it benefited from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau’s success in promoting the inbound tourism potential of the city and attracting a series of major events and conferences. Events such as the World Pipe Band Championships and the UDO World Street Dance Championships attracted tens of thousands of visitors to Glasgow during August.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “We enjoyed an extremely busy summer with more than 125,000 additional passengers using the airport during June, July and August compared to same period last year.

“Not only was it our busiest summer in five years, it was one of our best in terms of operational performance. Despite the significant increase in numbers and a host of large scale events, 99.4% of our passengers passed through security in less than 10 minutes during the summer months.”

Glasgow Airport has received a number of welcome airline announcements including confirmation from Icelandair it will increase seat capacity by 25% with the introduction of an additional weekly service in 2014. Both easyJet and Jet2.com have added extra capacity on their respective Amsterdam and Barcelona routes in response to Celtic’s progress in the Champions League.
