A Glasgow woman has won a ‘dream’ flight on a state-of-the-art new aircraft which will make its maiden voyage from the city’s airport next year.

Thomson Airways has revealed its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be named ‘Living the Dream’ after inviting suggestions on Twitter.

The judging panel was moved by the story behind Nicola’s entry, which she dedicated to Great Britain’s sporting achievements this year and her own personal triumph recovering from neuro surgery.

As well as naming the Dreamliner, Nicola will experience it for herself when Thomson becomes the first UK airline to take delivery of the aircraft next year. Glasgow Airport will also be the first airport in Scotland to welcome the Dreamliner, with Thomson operating weekly flights to Cancun, Mexico, and Sanford, Florida.

Nicola said: “I’m thrilled to name such an amazing plane. I wanted to propose a name that summarises the unique experience for passengers on board Thomson’s Dreamliner and was inspired by what an amazing year 2012 has been – from the inspiring Olympic and Paralympics achievements and for me on a personal level after surviving neuro surgery. After a full recovery I feel fantastic and can’t wait to celebrate naming the Dreamliner with a trip on board. I really do feel like I’m ‘Living the Dream’!”

Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Nicola’s story clearly made an impression and we are delighted for her. To be the first airport in Scotland to welcome the Dreamliner is a huge honour for us, and it is all the more special that the first one to operate on these shores has been named in Glasgow. The Dreamliner is at the cutting edge of aircraft design and it will provide Scottish passengers with a unique flying experience.”

Chris Browne, Managing Director of Thomson Airways, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response from the public to #nameourplane when judging the entries. However, we were moved by Nicola’s inspiring story which meant that ‘Living the Dream’ really stood out. We’re delighted to be the first UK airline to fly the 787 Dreamliner and its arrival marks an exciting time for Thomson Airways and our customers. It was only fitting to name one of these revolutionary aircraft in an equally innovative way.

“Nicola not only gets to name of our state-of-the-art aircraft, but will also fly on-board and enjoy a host of ground-breaking features designed to make her in-flight experience more enjoyable. We feel that this is the perfect way to give something back to our customers and make one of them a part of our history as we celebrate our 50th anniversary.”
