Paisley Fireworks and Christmas light switch on 2012

Double events boost for Paisley
Paisley is set for a double events boost after Renfrewshire Council decided to reintroduce two separate events in November for the Paisley Fireworks and Christmas Lights switch on.

The previous council combined the two events last year.

Now Renfrewshire Council has decided to bring them back as separate all-day events to start the countdown to Christmas in style.

The Paisley Fireworks Display will take place on Saturday 3 November.

The town’s Christmas Lights switch-on will be held on Saturday 10 November.

Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan said the decision was reached after discussion with the business community and will deliver two “distinctive, cost-effective events” with increased local involvement.

“First and foremost, this council believes that Paisley deserves and can sustain two big events,” said Councillor Macmillan.

“I am sure that the move will be welcomed by Paisley residents and the thousands of visitors who come to the town to enjoy the festivities.

“It’s also important that we maximise the impact of these events as part of the continuing partnership approach to regenerate Paisley town centre. By having two big events with thousands coming in to Paisley throughout the day on two successive Saturdays, local retailers can get ready for a double boost to start the countdown to Christmas.

“We’ve seen several positive signs for Paisley in recent months.  Those include new shops coming soon to the former Littlewoods store on the High street, the announcement of major residential investment in Gilmour Street, the council’s recent decision to introduce free on street parking in the town centre on Saturdays, and our plans to encourage private property owners to tidy up the appearance of their buildings.”

“When I spoke to business leaders on how we could build on those achievements, there was unanimous backing for the council’s plans not only to restore but further boost these events.

“We are in the process of securing commercial sponsorship for the leading performers at the events.  That demonstrates the commitment of local retailers to our two event strategy and our broader programme for the town centre.

“We will also be increasing local participation and involvement in the town centre events. There are exciting plans to showcase local talent alongside more established performers.

“Overall, these plans are good for the community and economy of Paisley and I look forward to announcing more details in the next few weeks.”

Bob Davidson, chief executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, said:  “Big events like these are great for Paisley – for businesses and  residents. And with the great turnout that I am sure these events will get, they’ll put Paisley proudly on the map as a great place for hosting events such as The Spree in October and the Royal National Mod next year. The Chamber encourages businesses to plan for these events and maximise the opportunity they bring – they are a great opportunity to attract new customers.”

Maureen Hill, Centre Manager at The Piazza Shopping Centre in Paisley, said:  “There’s a real buzz about Paisley on these big event days as tens of thousands of people come into the town centre.  It’s good news that Paisley will have two big events to launch the run up to Christmas.  I’m sure our stores in the Piazza will be looking to make the most of this opportunity and welcome existing and new customers.”

More details will be announced in the coming weeks on the performers and activities at both events.
