Education and training providers in Renfrewshire are teaming up for an event aimed at helping young people aged 16-24 find out about local opportunities to develop their skills and careers.

FuturesFest will take place in Paisley Town Hall on August 22 from 11am – 4.30pm.

The event is being organised by Renfrewshire Council, SDS (Skills Development Scotland) and Jobcentre Plus.

The aim is to provide in one place on one day, the information and advice needed by 16-24 year-olds on training, education and employment opportunities in Renfrewshire.

Although not a jobs fair, some employers who are about to embark on seasonal recruitment drives will be represented.

In addition to the event organisers, other organisations participating will include Reid Kerr College, UWS, Kibble, AM2PM (Amazon Recruitment), Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, Engage Renfrewshire, and Renfrewshire-Wide Credit Union.

“Everyone involved is aiming to give as much practical advice and information as possible to young people aged 16-24 about their future options,” said Councillor Roy Glen, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Employment and Economic Development Task Force.

“Recently there was very encouraging performance by Renfrewshire pupils in the national exam results and advice will be available for those who are looking to build on their exam achievements.

“Equally, we want to assist those who may have been out of school or higher education for some time and want to look again at the opportunities available to them.

“There’s lots of up to date advice available in an informal setting and we’d urge young people to come along.  It could make a real difference to their futures.

“Renfrewshire Council is already doing a lot to assist 16-24 year-olds into employment through the £2.5million Invest in Renfrewshire programme to support and grow the local economy.  FuturesFest is another example of a joint approach which is putting support in place for young people in these difficult economic times.”

Event organisers stressed that no pre-booking is required and that anyone aged 16-24 is welcome to turn up on the day.

In addition to the general guidance on offer, there will also be half-hour sector-based workshops on childcare, hospitality and construction.

Sessions will also be hosted by SDS on social media awareness.  The council’s community learning and development team will also run a workshop to help participants improve their employability.
