Weaving Musical Threads 3 & 4 March Throughout Renfrewshire

Weaving Musical Threads is Renfrewshire’s Olympic Festival celebration of its people, history and place in the world. Music, theatre, art, dance, literature, film and media will all be represented in diverse venues throughout the area. There is something for everyone and it is FREE.

Celebrating together with the rest of the UK during Music Nation weekend, Weaving Musical Threads will be a taste of Olympic prowess before the torch reaches Lochwinnoch in June.

The busy programme for the weekend includes performances by choirs, orchestras, writers, poets, classical and folk singers, youth bands and dancers, exhibitions by local artists and sculptors and rare film showings. Schools music will be represented alongside rock, jazz and ceilidh bands and classical piano quintets. Members of the public will be able to try out an accordion, play in an orchestra or sing in a choir. They can join with others to write a poem or a song, try out a spinning wheel and find out more about their local history from the various storytellers and historians on hand.

Saturday events will take place in town halls, historical cottages and museums across the area – Paisley, Johnstone, Lochwinnoch, Bishopton and Renfrew – while Sunday events will be concentrated in ‘The Hub’ – Paisley Abbey and Paisley Town Hall. All events are free to make them as accessible to everyone as possible.

Weaving Musical Threads is part of ‘Music Nation’, a spectacular weekend of music around the UK taking place on 3 and 4 March 2012 to set the scene and create excitement in the lead up to the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad. It has been organised by the BBC and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Renfrewshire’s is the only Scottish project of 13 nationally to have been selected by the Director of the London 2012 Festival from a list of projects put forward by Making Music. Bearing in mind the history of Renfrewshire, the committee of volunteers decided to take this opportunity to weave a tapestry of all the creative arts using music as the thread which binds them together.

This project contributes to the advancement of an integrated approach to the Arts across Renfrewshire by engaging with a wide variety of local community Arts groups and business partners, providing opportunities for them to work collaboratively, developing creative links across Renfrewshire.

Weaving Musical Threads is a weekend to be inspired, try something new, learn and enjoy a tapestry of the Arts. We will be pleased to give you any further information you require.
