Women’s 10k New Year’s Resolution

Cancer charity calls on local women to hit the road and make those New Year’s resolutions stick

Though the snow is still very much with us, for most the festive season is now well and truly over and the New Year’s blues are kicking in. Feelings of guilt over copious amounts of mince pies, Christmas chocolates and a few too many Hogmanay drinks abound and along come the inevitable resolutions to eat healthier and get fitter.

Now leading cancer care charity Macmillan Cancer Support is calling on women across the West of Scotland to make their New Year’s resolutions stick by signing up to the Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k which takes place in Glasgow on Sunday 9 May.

The 10k road race takes in many of Southside’s beautiful parks making it one of the most scenic in the UK. The course is also flat, making it ideal for anyone to take part, whether you’re a seasoned runner, a keen jogger or a first-timer looking to walk much of the course.

The race is a perfect way to get fit, take on a bit of a challenge and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere of one of Scotland’s premier events. The women-only race always leads to friendly camaraderie with fellow runners and friends and family on the sidelines cheering the 10,000 wonder women on as they pound the city’s streets.

Macmillan Cancer Support is looking to build on the success of the 2009 race by getting even more women running as part of Team Macmillan in May this year. “Last year over 135 local women ran the Women’s 10k in aid of Macmillan and all the families we support in the West of Scotland, helping us to raise over £28,000,” said Macmillan’s Glasgow Fundraising manager Rob Cartwright. “This could help fund a Macmillan benefits adviser for a year providing welfare benefits advice to around 200 people in the West of Scotland to help them with the financial problems that often arise from living with cancer.”

“At present Macmillan is reaching approximately a third of all people affected by cancer. By joining Team Macmillan for the Glasgow 10k, local women can help Macmillan achieve our ambition of improving the lives of everyone affected by the disease through our practical, medical, financial and emotional support services.”

“Entering the Glasgow Women’s 10k is a great way to set yourself a personal challenge to burn off those Christmas carbs or get the girls together and have a great girls’ day out, whether it’s work colleagues, family members, Mums from the school gates, Uni friends or girls from the gym!”

Anyone joining team Macmillan will be given stacks of support and encouragement by Macmillan cheering squads who will line the route around the Southside of Glasgow. Team Macmillan runners will also be given a handy training guide and a sponsorship pack full of handy fundraising tips, as well as the famous green Macmillan vest with iron-on name letters so friends, family and spectators can cheer you on.
